Michael
Hey, one more thing before you go.
Michael
Before we get started on today's episode, we would like to say that our hearts, thoughts and prayers are out to everyone affected by the fires in Southern California, both family and friends, as well as those.
Michael
So many people who are losing everything that they've got.
Michael
This absolute catastrophic event is unimaginable.
Michael
And everyone that has been affected in one form or another, those who lost everything, our first responders, our firefighters, our police officers, our EMTs on the, on the front lines, and the volunteers on the back end, our hearts go out to you.
Michael
Our thoughts, our prayers go out to you.
Michael
Please stay safe 100%.
Diane
Don't make me cry.
Diane
I'm gonna wake mess up my makeup.
Diane
The.
Diane
With all this stuff going on in the world, you know, this kind of seems, I don't know, shallow maybe to do something to talk about a TV show.
Diane
But, you know, I think, I think we all use TV and movies and entertainment to escape what's happening.
Diane
And I think that especially with the fires and other things going on in the world right now, we're just here to talk about it, some, something that's enjoyable for an hour and can help you feel better for just a short time.
Diane
So that's why we're still doing this.
Michael
I agree.
Michael
So with that in mind, what do you get, Diane, when you have a quirky, cute cleaning lady with a photographic memory and OCD to make sure everything is in order and right where it's supposed to be?
Michael
You kind of used to that with me, right?
Michael
Just a little.
Diane
On some things.
Diane
Not everything.
Michael
Not everything.
Diane
Not everything.
Michael
And what happens when you join that with a team of detectives solving murders?
Michael
Well, in this episode, we're going to answer some of those questions and more.
Michael
We're diving into one of our favorite television shows, our new favorite television shows.
Michael
High potential, captivating television show that's been making waves.
Michael
I'm Michael Hurst.
Michael
I am joined by my wonderful wife and co host, Diane.
Diane
Hello, everyone.
Michael
Welcome to one more thing before we go over the Teacup Sunday.
Michael
Hi, Diane.
Diane
Hi, Michael.
Michael
Well, that was a, that was a rough start to the show.
Michael
We haven't had that in a really long time.
Michael
But yeah, with what's going on in the world and going on locally, we have family and friends in the California area, a lot of friends, a lot of.
Michael
And we just, we understand.
Michael
And our empathy has just kind of overworked itself lately and it's just almost overwhelming.
Diane
We're grateful that we don't have.
Diane
We don't.
Diane
That we know of right now.
Diane
Anyone who's been personally affected.
Diane
I know I have a friend that was on standby to evacuate.
Diane
Luckily, thank God, thankfully, our daughter and son in law have not been put on even standby.
Diane
They're farther away from the fire.
Michael
The smoke and the ashes.
Diane
Yes, yes, they're getting the smoke and the ash, but they, they are safe.
Diane
So, I mean, thank God for that.
Diane
But we've just been watching so much coverage of it and you know, we, where we recognize, you know, some of the places that they talked about and it's, it's, it's unbelievable and it's, it's hard to even imagine what they're going through.
Michael
Well, I do have some entertainment friends that I still associate with that from the cuff, from my conferences and from the film festivals and things like that that have been affected by it and have had to evacuate.
Michael
And you know, some of them, I don't know whether they've lost anything, but I know that they were evacuated and had to leave the areas.
Diane
I didn't know that.
Michael
Again, we just want to emphasize how much our hearts and our prayers, our thoughts and our prayers are out with everybody that's been affected and unfortunately will continue to be affected throughout this catastrophic event.
Michael
But now let's try to lighten the day a little bit.
Michael
And I am really excited about talking about this show.
Michael
Like I said earlier, it's one of our favorite new shows.
Michael
We know the, the, the characters, the, the main characters, all the main characters actually, we've seen on other things.
Michael
They've always been a favorite of ours, especially Caitlyn Olsen.
Michael
Yeah, yeah.
Michael
It's pretty cool, huh?
Diane
Yeah, I love it, I love it.
Diane
It's a comedy.
Diane
I mean, I would say it's a comedy, but it also has some real touching moments in it too.
Michael
Yeah, it really does.
Michael
And you know, it caught on really quickly.
Michael
And you know, it's interesting because ABC launched this, you know, opposite Elsbeth, and there's some similarities between that and CBS's Elsbeth.
Michael
But I think that having the approach that ABC is doing with high potential in the way that they're doing it, I think is better, in my opinion.
Michael
It's a little bit coming from an individual.
Michael
I mean, you watched Monk with me, didn't you?
Michael
Yeah, we love Monk.
Michael
So it's, you know, you have the OCD of Monk in a certain way, but then you've got touches of other programs that we have watched where you get the photographic memory and you get the, oh, I can piece that together.
Michael
No, that doesn't belong there this belongs there.
Michael
And, you know, Psych was doing it.
Michael
You know, Psych and Psych, they'd go.
Michael
You know, he'd see these things and they'd flash back and he'd piece them together.
Michael
But, you know, he was Potential, was portraying a psychic, but in reality was using his photographic memory in regard to.
Diane
Helping to solve a crime and sort of.
Diane
What was that show?
Diane
Elementary, or is that still on?
Michael
Yeah, yeah, elementary.
Michael
Yeah.
Michael
With.
Michael
So it reminds me a lot, like you said, that you set up elementary.
Michael
Elementary starred Johnny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu, and it was kind of a Sherlock Holmes type thing where he was solving cases like that.
Michael
And it was the same.
Michael
Same principle.
Diane
It's kind of a mixture.
Michael
Yeah, but.
Michael
But it brings a nice, I think, to this.
Michael
And especially Caitlin Olson.
Michael
The last thing that we actually saw.
Michael
I know she was in sunny Philadelphia.
Michael
Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Michael
But we only didn't.
Diane
We only saw a few episodes of.
Diane
Actually we need to go back and watch it.
Michael
We do, but we also.
Michael
In the Mick.
Diane
The Mick.
Michael
We loved her in the Mick.
Michael
It was.
Michael
It was like, fantastic.
Michael
So it was nice to see her come into something.
Michael
And she's married to a comedian who's.
Diane
Who is also in sunny Philadelphia.
Michael
Yes.
Diane
And they just did a crossover, actually, of the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia cast along with Abbott Elementary.
Diane
They just did a crossover, which we didn't see, but I know they were.
Diane
They did it.
Diane
And he also is a co owner of the English soccer team, and I don't remember which one, with Ryan Reynolds.
Michael
And his name is Wexum.
Diane
Yeah.
Michael
Welcome to Wexum is the show that they've got.
Michael
They've got a show, basically, them acquiring the team itself and then how they evolved it and how they took it to a championship.
Diane
And this whole time we're talking like this, we're trying to remember his name.
Michael
That's okay.
Diane
Yeah, I can see him.
Diane
Everybody knows what we're talking about.
Michael
Everybody knows what we're talking about.
Michael
And today we're talking about high potential.
Michael
So should I tell everybody about high potential?
Diane
Yes.
Michael
This show, High potential, premiered on September 17, 2024.
Michael
It's aired about eight episodes so far.
Michael
It follows the story of Morgan, a single mom of three whose exceptional mind helps her solve crimes while working as a cleaner for the police department.
Michael
It's a compelling blend of mystery, drama, a touch of humor.
Michael
This amazing favorite stars Kaitlin Olson, Daniel Sunjada, who, I will remind everybody here in a few minutes where we know him from.
Michael
Javica.
Michael
Is it Java or Havoca.
Michael
How do you pronounce her name?
Michael
J A, V, I, C, I, A.
Michael
Havoca.
Diane
I don't, I don't know.
Michael
Havoca.
Michael
Leslie.
Michael
We'll try that.
Michael
And Matthew Lamb.
Michael
Each brings their.
Michael
Sorry, that's not right.
Michael
Each brings their own unique flair to their drolls, making the characters truly unforgettable.
Michael
I think what sets high potential parts is, is the unique premise.
Michael
Morgan's unorthodox method of rearranging evidence while cleaning brings a fresh kind of a refreshing twist to the crime solving genre.
Michael
As we talked about, it's not about just solving mysteries.
Michael
It's also about the resilience and ingenuity of everyday characters, which, which, I mean, I.
Michael
Coming as a cop, I would love to have had somebody like her.
Diane
Right.
Michael
Available to me.
Diane
But of course there's always got to be, you know, at least one that's resentful and doesn't like her and he hasn't really been in the last couple episodes, so.
Diane
Interesting.
Diane
But yeah, she's not a, she's not the cleaning lady for long.
Diane
We'll just put that, put it that way in case you haven't seen it.
Michael
But if you, yeah, if you have seen it, obviously you know the, you know where it has evolved into.
Michael
But you know, the cast characters have great chemistry.
Michael
I think that the, the, the availability of what they've been able to create, it makes it a very compelling show to watch.
Michael
I think, you know, you, you get to try to figure out, you know, you and I do this all the time and I've, I've trained you.
Michael
You've.
Michael
You're no longer a rookie.
Diane
Yeah, I've, I've learned a lot about figuring out who did what in the shows.
Michael
It's pretty, it's.
Michael
Yes, it's.
Diane
Sometimes I even figure it out before you.
Michael
Sometimes you do.
Michael
There has been occasion that you have.
Diane
Never used to happen.
Michael
But, but we like watching the kind of shows that we can figure things out without being so apparent, you know, because sometimes they just, it's like, oh, that's just too apparent, that's too easy.
Michael
You know, we like being able to kind of go along with the show and watch what's happening as it's happening and figure it out, you know, kind of a thing.
Michael
So, you know, from this approach, I think that they do a really good job with doing that.
Diane
Yeah, it's.
Diane
I, I love.
Diane
It's so funny because you can see her mind.
Diane
You can see the, you can see the wheels turning, you know, when she's looking and even they.
Diane
They say it too, like, oh, she's getting that look.
Diane
But I, I've noticed that this show.
Diane
I immediately liked the cast as a cast where some shows, you're kind of like, I don't know that they're really melding all that well.
Diane
I'm not sure this.
Diane
This one should be there.
Diane
You know, what is this character there that all of them are there for a purpose.
Michael
And it makes a lot of sense.
Michael
Yeah, it's cool.
Michael
It's pretty.
Michael
I think that even in the respect that the, the police department itself, you know, it.
Michael
It's.
Michael
It's.
Michael
It is a homicide unit.
Michael
So, you know, there's something there that kind of allows her just to work with that group within itself.
Michael
So I think building the chemistry between all of them is.
Michael
Is really good.
Michael
Caitlin Olson again, you know, she was Dee Reynolds and Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which I, you know, I think I watched more of Always Sunny in Philadelphia a little bit more than you did, because probably I think Nicole was.
Michael
Still.
Michael
Was with us for a little while while that was playing, and she really loved it.
Michael
So I think I watched the first season of Always Sunny Philadelphia, but, you know, still a great.
Michael
She's a great.
Michael
And she's a great actor.
Michael
She's a great comedian.
Michael
She's written out for her role again in that.
Michael
Her comedic timing, ability to balance humor with emotional depth shine through in that series.
Michael
MacKenzie, Mickey Malone in the Mick, which, you know, that Mick is kind of a wild, brash woman who becomes the guardian of her sister's spoiled children.
Michael
I think she works.
Michael
She works well in this because she's got kids.
Michael
In.
Michael
In.
Michael
You see the.
Michael
You.
Michael
You see what she brings kind of forward with that as well, because she.
Michael
I think she brings a little bit of that character with her to this, I think.
Diane
So you can.
Diane
You can see pieces of that, for sure.
Diane
Glimpses, at least.
Diane
Yeah.
Diane
And you know her, the character.
Diane
We have to mention him, the, the baby daddy character because I don't think they ever married in the.
Diane
You know, the character's never married.
Diane
He is.
Diane
He's been all over the place for a long time, too.
Diane
And he was in a show I really liked, Single Parents.
Diane
It was on a few years ago.
Michael
And.
Diane
I'm sorry.
Diane
Blanking on his name again.
Diane
I'm blanking on names today.
Diane
Every day.
Michael
It was a rough start this morning.
Michael
And I don't.
Michael
I don't remember if he was on snl.
Diane
I don't think he was.
Diane
No, I don't think he was or something that he's married To Colby Smulders, who was in Everything, and we love her, too.
Diane
And I can't remember his name.
Diane
Anyway, look up Colby Smers.
Diane
That's her husband, and he's in the show, too, and he's not in it enough.
Diane
That's what I'm trying to get to.
Diane
He is not in this enough.
Diane
He deserves a bigger role.
Diane
He is awesome.
Michael
I believe it.
Diane
And I'm.
Diane
Even though I can't remember his name.
Diane
He's awful.
Diane
Yeah.
Michael
Daniel Sundiata.
Michael
He was Frank Rivera in Rescue Me.
Michael
He's perhaps known for his best role as Franco Rivera.
Michael
He was a firefighter in that acclaimed TV series, Paul Briggs.
Michael
In Graceland, he played an undercover FBI agent living in a house with other agents from various federal agencies.
Michael
I watched that for a little while, and as far as recognizing from there, it was pretty good.
Michael
He also was James Holton, the Devil Wears Prada played a fashion designer in this popular film with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.
Michael
And he played Reggie Jackson in the Bronx Is Burning.
Michael
He also portrayed the legendary baseball player in a miniseries.
Michael
You know, he.
Michael
I've seen him some other things as well, so, I mean, we recognize him.
Michael
You'll recognize him.
Michael
But the chemistry between him and Kaitlin Olson, is it.
Michael
It.
Michael
It's good.
Michael
I think their chemistry works really well, you know?
Diane
Yeah, they're great.
Michael
And then I wish I could pronounce her name correctly.
Michael
I probably should do this better.
Michael
Maybe go find something to.
Michael
Go figure out how to pronounce some people's names.
Michael
Havoc.
Michael
Leslie.
Michael
She was Ryan Wilder in Batwoman.
Michael
She made handling has been taken over the title role in the CW series, becoming the first black actress to play Batwoman.
Michael
Ally Finer in God Befriended Me.
Michael
Amber.
Michael
She was the sister of the main character.
Diane
And shown the bar.
Michael
Yeah, shown the bar.
Michael
The wine bar, which is another series.
Michael
I wish CBS would not have canceled.
Michael
Whole other conversation, but we've talked about God, Godfriend.
Michael
Godfriended me in many other episodes that we've talked about it, but we know her from there, mostly from there.
Michael
Paris Hilton.
Michael
Excuse me.
Michael
Paris Duncan in Family Business, A member of a powerful family.
Michael
It's a BET drama, and I think that the show has the power to inspire, motivate you.
Michael
It's a reminder that everyone has untapped potential.
Michael
And sometimes the most unlikely heroes shine the brightest.
Michael
I think the combination of them all is.
Michael
And the cases that they're presenting aren't really far fetched.
Michael
I mean, that's one thing I like about it, is the Cases are something reasonable.
Diane
Yeah, you can believe it.
Diane
You can believe that they've happened and.
Michael
The outcomes and the investigation unfolding, the way it unfolds, it makes sense.
Michael
It's not the thing where you just throw something together.
Michael
A lot of times you get a homicide on TV and then you have the typical.
Michael
You show up and there's crime tape everywhere and there's cops everywhere.
Michael
The detectives go in and they check the post, how long has he been dead?
Michael
And we have any suspects.
Michael
And then it kind of goes on, you know.
Michael
But this, I think, intrigues me.
Michael
From my perspective as an investigator and a cop in the past, I think that what it does for me is it kind of goes, oh, now you.
Michael
You're really having to analyze, and you're having to really go into this in depth, and you have to really, you know, pick this stuff out.
Michael
And.
Michael
And to me, I appreciate that.
Diane
That's.
Diane
It.
Diane
Just.
Diane
She's really thinking things through.
Diane
And.
Diane
And some of the ways she comes up with the stuff.
Diane
At first when she's talking about it, like, what?
Diane
No way.
Diane
But then she's.
Diane
She.
Diane
She lays it out and why.
Diane
And it's like, oh, yeah, that does make sense.
Diane
So, I don't know.
Diane
It's.
Diane
It's.
Diane
It's funny.
Diane
It's.
Diane
It's touching.
Diane
It's, you know, when she's dealing with her kids and all this other.
Diane
Other stuff, and it.
Diane
There's.
Diane
There's some.
Diane
It's not just one.
Diane
It's not just about what happened, you know, the murder or the.
Diane
Whatever's happened that they're investigating.
Diane
It's not just about that.
Diane
There's other layers to the story that are happening throughout the series.
Michael
Well, I'm gonna give away.
Michael
I'm gonna give away just a little bit because I'm hoping everybody has already seen this.
Michael
And if you haven't seen it, I'm gonna give away just a little bit just because.
Diane
Spoiler alert.
Michael
Exactly.
Michael
Spoiler alert.
Michael
Spoiler alert.
Michael
So this show, if you haven't seen it, this show opens as one of my favorite openings in so many other shows.
Michael
It has a clean lady come into this detective's office, the department agency's office, which I did have some questions as to why it was shut down, because typically it's supposed to work 24 hours a day.
Diane
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Diane
You were saying that.
Diane
That is the one thing that happened.
Diane
You were like, wait a minute, where are all the cops?
Diane
It's not supposed to be shut down at night.
Michael
So she comes in.
Michael
What you see is a Clean lady come in and she's got earbuds in and she's dancing.
Michael
And she's dancing.
Michael
And she's dancing on the furniture.
Michael
Dance or dancing on furniture, on the shorew.
Michael
Wiping everything down and clean everything until she comes to a murder board.
Michael
And she stops at the murder board and she's doing stuff.
Michael
She keeps looking at it.
Michael
Keeps looking at it.
Michael
And then before she leaves, she goes over and she switches everything around and.
Diane
And then, you know, basically putting, putting the pieces in place.
Michael
Yes.
Michael
Which they had been trying to do but couldn't by looking at the murder board.
Michael
And here you see her shoulder.
Michael
She fixes everything and then she closes everything up and leaves.
Michael
And then the next day they all come in and they kind of get what happened.
Michael
What'd you do to my murder board?
Diane
Right, well.
Diane
And then didn't they have to.
Diane
They had to figure out who did it too?
Diane
I mean, they, they looked back on the security footage or something and.
Michael
Yeah.
Michael
See her dancing first.
Michael
They see her dancing around.
Diane
Yeah, yeah.
Michael
Because she's dancing around the room.
Michael
Clean.
Michael
Which look, if you're gonna, you, you have to do your thing.
Michael
You have to go in and clean this whole office building.
Michael
There's no reason why you can't dance.
Diane
Around if it helps you get your job done better.
Diane
Sure.
Michael
But.
Michael
So it was kind of funny.
Michael
They call her in and say, did you do that?
Michael
Well, yeah.
Michael
Well, yeah, because it wasn't right.
Michael
You guys had this wrong and this wrong and that wrong.
Michael
And so yeah, and then, and then they, they went, okay, well let's try this.
Michael
And it works.
Michael
So that's how it really develops into the show that it is because you get to see her ocd, you get to see her crime solving skills and you just see the chemistry.
Michael
You get to see.
Michael
I mean, she comes in, she, she doesn't dress like a cop.
Michael
I'll just put that out there.
Michael
She doesn't dress like a cop.
Michael
She dresses like a, a 19 year old.
Diane
Yeah, but she's, you know, look, if you got the body for it, do it.
Michael
Yeah, she definitely got the body for it.
Diane
So yeah, it doesn't last that long.
Diane
So good for her.
Michael
It's all good.
Michael
But anyway, we should wrap this up.
Michael
We didn't want to make this quick and easy because we didn't want to take care of most of your day.
Michael
So I think in my opinion, my verdict is if you haven't watched high potential, binge it.
Diane
Oh yeah, Very Benjamin show.
Diane
Definitely.
Michael
If you have watched high potential, we need to like, absolutely put the word out for a second season.
Michael
We're hoping that these fires that have destroyed so much out in California and put so much on hold that it doesn't affect the industry, you know, to a point where some things get canceled or not being able to.
Michael
The rookie films there.
Michael
Rookie films in Santa Monica films and everywhere that it was burning.
Diane
The rookie films and yeah, they do a lot.
Diane
A lot of location shoots on.
Diane
On the Rookie and a lot of other shows and this one too.
Diane
High potential as well.
Diane
Looks to me like they're.
Diane
I mean maybe, maybe not.
Diane
I don't know for sure but they sure make it look like they're doing real location shooting on the show.
Michael
They are.
Diane
They are doing real location shooting and yeah.
Diane
What's going to happen now with so many of the shows now?
Diane
I thought high potential already got a second season.
Diane
It has not yet.
Michael
I believe that they have got a second season.
Michael
I believe that I read something about them getting a second season.
Michael
So.
Diane
Okay.
Diane
Because you just said you were hoped that they do but.
Michael
Well, what they did was they gave.
Michael
They gave him an eight episode start and based on the ratings they gave him like three or four more episodes.
Diane
Okay.
Michael
To go through before season two.
Michael
But they won't.
Diane
So basically we want them to get a full second.
Michael
We want to give them a full second season.
Michael
Full second season.
Michael
So watch it, binge it.
Michael
Check it out.
Michael
It is a.
Michael
A.
Michael
It's a much.
Michael
What a must.
Diane
Must watch.
Michael
Yeah, I tongue tied there.
Michael
Sorry.
Michael
Must watch.
Diane
It is definitely a must watch.
Diane
It's one of our favorite shows.
Diane
I love it and it definitely helps me escape from reality for an hour, you know.
Michael
Yeah.
Diane
Yeah.
Michael
So it works.
Michael
Yep, it works.
Michael
It works.
Michael
So one more thing before you all go.
Michael
You have any words of wisdom?
Michael
Diane, you want to share anything?
Diane
Nope.
Diane
Just again our hearts go out to Southern California and everybody affected and the first responders and the firefighters.
Diane
Oh my goodness.
Diane
I.
Diane
I can't even imagine what the firefighters have been going through.
Diane
So we are thinking of you and thoughts and prayers go out.
Diane
Not that how much that helps, but we are thinking of you.
Michael
I think those are amazing words of wisdom.
Michael
I concur.
Michael
So everyone out there, thank you very much for being a part of One more Thing before you go.
